Chaplains Letter 4 1 15

Traveling Health & Screening Fair, Waite Park MN

Today 6 Faith Community Nurses helped welcome people 50+ to the first of three Traveling Health & Screening Fairs this spring. Pictured are Dental Students from the St. Cloud Technical and Community College Dental Program.  They checked people for oral cancer and discussed dental care with them.  They came to my church to do a presentation called “Keep Those Pearly Whites” and discussed toothpastes, rinses and floss, power and regular toothbrushes, need for regular dental cleaning and check ups, implants, crowns, dentures, dry mouth and more and gave out samples.  One tip they gave us is the use of gum and mints with Xylitol which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.  Gum with Xylitol is in my Easter baskets this year.  From Web MD: As a medicine, xylitol is used to prevent middle ear infections (otitis media) in young children, and as a sugar substitute for people with diabetes. Xylitol is added to some chewing gums and other oral care products to prevent tooth decay and dry mouth. They also shared the low-cost dental services available at the school.
